Kitchen & bathroom remodeling is greater than the sum of its parts
Kitchen and bathrooms are made up of dozens of components; most remodeling involves new countertops. Before you select a one, it’s good to know about its performance. Countertops can be:
- Laminate countertops are water and stain resistant and perform well in bathrooms and kitchens; these materials burn easily and there is no repair other than replacement; excellent selection of colors and affordable price-points
- Solid surface materials are made of acrylic resins and come in selections that are doppelgangers for expensive stones, as well as a full range of colors and textures; light damage is easily repaired using fine sandpaper – review manufacturers’ instructions
- Tile just as they are on walls and flooring, tiles are hardwearing and come in all shapes, colors and patterns; new grout formulations battle the problems of dirt and mildew caught between tiles
- Granite and quartz are hardwearing, handsome choices resistant to scratching and staining – except for grease; use a cutting board to avoid dulling your kitchen knives; both stones need a sealant application periodically
- Wood is attractive and affordable as planks or butcher block; wood countertops in bathrooms should be sealed with polyurethane or marine varnish, in a kitchen use specialty oils
